How to Change folder background in Windows 7/vista/xp

We like to customize folder and drive’s icon, color, view to give it a unique look. What about changing folder background? Usually we use software to do that. But here we’ll change the folder’s background without any software. To do so firstly we should know, what is the “desktop.ini” and how it works?

set background image
Folder Background
Desktop.ini is the file where system assigns the values of icon, info, background image source etc. The folder will gives info about itself or a thumbnail view which has the proper desktop.ini file. It is a hidden system file and it's possible to show by CASE: 2 step: 2 in this article. Nothing to worry about it because the system can automatically create a new one if the file is being damaged or absent. It just needs a reboot of the system.

The following tutorial will show how to set an image as the background in a folder. This tutorial is divided into two CASEs according two different conditions.

CASE 1: Creating a desktop.ini file:

1. Go to the folder which background image will be changed.

2. Create a new text file and open to edit it.

3. Copy following two lines and paste them to the text file.

[AveFolder]
IconArea_Image="C:\Users\user_name\my pictures\image.jpg"

4. If you want a shadow effect for text give ShadowedText=1 and for applying same image to all sub directories give Recursive=1 like this.

[AveFolder]
IconArea_Image="C:\Users\user_name\my pictures\image.jpg"
ShadowedText=1
Recursive=1

Untitled
ShadowText & Recursive

5. After creating, save the text file then rename it to desktop.ini and restart your PC.

The “IconArea_Image=” (CASE: 1 step 3) describes the source path of the background-Image. You should not select an image source path from removal disk. If you are setting up the image of your removal drive then your background-image source should describe a path of that drive.

Sometimes a message could come showing replacement of desktop.ini file. That means your working folder already has same file. It is better to cancel the replacement of this file and follow the CASE: 2.

CASE 2: Editing desktop.ini: 1. Go to Folder Option from Control panel or from explorer’s menu bar>folder option.

Folder Option Windows
Folder Option from Control Panel

Folder option (2) Windows
Folder option from Explorer menu bar

2. Select view tab and scroll down to find out hide protected operating system file and uncheck it. It is important to mark Show hidden files, folders and drives first from this view tab.

un hide protected file of OS
Folder Option>View tab

3. Find out the desktop.ini in the current directory and open it with a text editor, like: notepad.

4. Paste the lines described in CASE: 1 step: 3, just after the [.ShellClassInfo]’s description lines.
shell class info and ave folder
[.ShellClassInfo] & [AveFolder]

5. Save and exit from desktop.ini
6. Restart your PC to take an effect on OS.

Important: The background image won’t change properly until restart your computer.

Speed up Google Chrome:Hidden Tips

Google Chrome has become the most popular browser for its flexibility, stability and simplicity. There is no doubt that it is faster and an advanced browser with advanced features designed for all. Though sometimes it becomes slower comparing your requirements, PC hardware and imagination. For these reasons Google chrome will let you modify and make the browser more suitable in your working environment.

Here the time saving tips with some hidden tricks to increase the browsing, download and start-up speed of Chrome browser.

Note: All these tips are same for Google Chrome 19 or above versions.

1. Set high priority to Google Chrome process.
Windows OS shares the processor time between all running processes based upon their priority. Setting the higher priority to a process means that the process is more important to the operating system compared other low priority processes. This will gear-up the start up time and browsing speed of the browser. To set a high priority to Google Chrome, open the Windows Task Manager by pressing "Ctrl+Shift+Esc" together. Then run the Browser and from Task Manager Find out the chrome.exe. Right click on it and set the priority higher.

2. Disable Google Chrome automatic updates.
This will stop the Google chrome update process "GoogleUpdater.exe" and let the browser work more lightly every time. It helps the browser start-up more quickly. It also save some CPU and RAM usages. We have discussed it here and showed how to disable it.

3. Enabling GPU acceleration and composting.
Now-a-days web pages are more and more graphically designed for the users. So the web browsers are implementing hardware acceleration technology for GPU. This will help the browser to accelerate the GPU (graphics processing unit) signals on pages. Go to browser address bar in Google Chrome and type "chrome://flags" and hit Enter. Enable both GPU composting on all pages and GPU accelerated SVG and CSS filters.

4. Configuring Settings.
This part will show only those settings whose are important for the browser to get some extra speed. It is also a useful idea for slow internet connection.
Go to the wrench icon top-right corner and click on Settings. Expand the Show advanced settings from the bottom of this page.

     b. Appearances. Un-tick on both Show home button and Always show bookmark.
Appearances Settings

     c. Privacy. Un-tick on Use a web service to help resolve navigation errors and Automatically send usage statistics and crash reports to Google.

     e. HTTPS/SSL. No need to choose Check for server certificate revocation. Because certificate revocation is not needed normally.

Update: Before providing any personal and/or sensitive information on web pages, for the safety reason, this button should be checked to ensure whether the page using a secure connection or not.

5. Disable Developer mode.
If you aren't a developer then disable this mode by going wrench icon > Tools > Extensions > un-tick Developer mode.

6. Clear Browsing Data. There is nothing new to say that your browsing data will slow down the browser. So better is to practice clearing browsing data regularly. This option is available in wrench > Settings.

From now you will notice that your Google Chrome browser is more speedy than before.
Please note that some tips may not be same in future as the Google Chrome is realizing updates frequently and making changes to different options.

How to Hide or Unhide Hard Disk Partition in Windows 7/Vista/xp

Hiding a partition or volume from my computer or explorer is preventing that partition from displaying, but it doesn't mean erasing any data or deleting the volume. Windows OS Disk management system allows hiding drives except the System drive where the OS is installed and the System reserved volume. So, anyone who has administrative privilege or the administrator of the Windows machine can do this task. And the basic trick is, without any drive letter (Ex: C:, D:, E: etc.) Windows OS doesn't recognize any drive or partition and here we are going to remove that letter temporally.

To do this task you need administrator privilege. So, why don't you activate the administrator account and use it.

How to hide a drive:
     1. Click right mouse on the computer and select Manage. Select the disk management under storage from the left pane. Or, you can also get the Disk management typing diskmgmt.msc in the run and pressing enter.
Disk Management

     2. From there click right-mouse on which drive you want to hide and select Change Drive Letters and Paths.
Change Drive Letter or Path

     3. Now select remove. Don’t worry! This action just removes the drive letter.
Remove drive

     4. Pressing on the Remove a warning message will be shown and accept it by clicking on yes. It’s just telling you that all programs installed on that drive won’t work or this drive is opened by another program.
Warning Message

It’s done! Your selected drive is hidden now.

The hidden drive won’t be appearing to the administrator of the OS unless it is unbidden.

How to unhide the drive:
    1. Open the Disk Management as shown above.

    2. Right mouse click on the drive which is hidden/removed. Tips: the hidden drive doesn’t contain any drive letter.

    3. Choose the Change Drive Letters and Paths and select Add to add drive letter or path to the hidden drive.
Add hidden drive

Assign drive letter

     4. At last choose a drive letter to assign the drive/partition and press on OK. Wow! The hidden partition is displayed in an explorer or my computer.

That's it! No data is lost or damage. Even the installed files are working again without any errors. From now you shouldn't need any extra software to hide or unhide your PC's drives. And if it helps you, why don't you share or rate this?

How To Create A Password Protected Folder Using Notepad

Hi Guys.......
Today I'm going to teach you how to create a password protected folder. It's free and you don't need some kind of special software to do it. So we're going to create the folder using a simple coding on Notepad. Since not everyone know coding, I already provided the code, all you need to do is copy it. So kind of me, right? It's only working on Windows, I already tested it on Windows 7, and some friends of mine have it tested on Windows 8.

What you need to do:

1.  Create a random folder with random name somewhere on your computer (for example, on your Desktop).
2.  Open Notepad and paste this code to your Notepad
@ECHO OFF
title Folder TipsandGuidelines
if EXIST "Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}" goto UNLOCK
if NOT EXIST TipsandGuidelines goto MDLOCKER
:CONFIRM
echo Are you sure you want to lock the folder(Y/N)
set/p "cho=>"
if %cho%==Y goto LOCK
if %cho%==y goto LOCK
if %cho%==n goto END
if %cho%==N goto END
echo Invalid choice.
goto CONFIRM
:LOCK
ren TipsandGuidelines "Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}"
attrib +h +s "Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}"
echo Folder locked
goto End
:UNLOCK
echo Enter password to unlock folder
set/p "pass=>"
if NOT %pass%== 12345 goto FAIL
attrib -h -s "Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}"
ren "Control Panel.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}" TipsandGuidelines
echo Folder Unlocked successfully
goto End
:FAIL
echo Invalid password
goto end
:MDLOCKER
md TipsandGuidelines
echo TipsandGuidelines created successfully
goto End
:End

3.  Change the Digits 12345  (the digits I marked in Green from the code), to your desired password. (For example: TipsandGuidelines)
4.  Save As or Press (Ctrl + S) and name it "TipsandGuidelines.bat" (without the quotation marks), then click on the "Save as Type" option and choose "All Files (*.*)". Save it on the random folder that you created earlier.
5.  Close the notepad and open the folder that you created earlier, there should be some program named "TipsandGuidelines.bat" that you created earlier, click on it and it should create a new folder named "TipsandGuidelines" by itself. Do not change the folder name, as it may caused error.
6.  Now you have a random folder with a folder inside of it named "TipsandGuidelines", put some private things maybe a pictures, videos, or anything in to the "TipsandGuidelines" folder.
7.  When you're done, click twice on the "TipsandGuidelines.bat", and it should give you the option to lock the folder. Press "y" to lock the folder,

 Don't be surprise once you agree to locked the folder, the "TipsandGuidelines" folder will disappear along with anything you put inside of it.
8.  To spawn the folder, you need to click on the "TipsandGuidelines.bat" and enter your password,

 Then the folder will spawn by itself. To lock and make the folder disappear again, all you need to do is click on the "TipsandGuidelines.bat" and an option appear that told you if you want to lock the folder again, you must press "y".

9.  Done and enjoy,don't forget to subscribe to my blog!
